Virginia Ngozi Etiaba, a Nigerian politician and the first woman to serve as a governor of a Nigerian state, was born on November 11, 1942, in Nnewi, Anambra State.
Virginia Etiaba worked as a teacher for 35 years, heading several schools in Kafanchan, Aba, and Port Harcourt. She retired from the Anambra State Government in 1991 and founded Benneth Etiaba Memorial Schools in Nnewi, where she served as proprietress.
In March 2006, Virginia Etiaba resigned to assume the position of deputy governor of Anambra State. On November 03, 2006, Virginia Etiaba was sworn in as Nigeria's first female governor after the Anambra State legislature impeached Governor Peter Obi for alleged gross misconduct. However, the courts later nullified the impeachment, reinstating Peter Obi. Three months after assuming office, Virginia Etiaba transferred her powers back to Obi.
