Basil Efoise Omiyi, commonly known as Basil Omiyi, is a distinguished Nigerian banker and financial professional with an extensive background in the Nigerian banking and oil and gas industries.
Omiyi was appointed as the Managing Director of Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) in Nigeria, effective September 1, 2004. His appointment marked a significant milestone in his career and in the history of the company.
Prior to this role, Basil Omiyi spent a substantial part of his career with the Royal Dutch Shell Group, where he held various technical and leadership positions in Nigeria, the UK, and the Netherlands. His experience spanned multiple high-profile roles within the company, reflecting his expertise and leadership in the energy sector.
Upon his return to Nigeria in 1992, Omiyi took on several key leadership roles at Shell. He served as Production Manager, Director of External Relations and Environment, and later as Country Production Director. As Country Production Director, he managed an installed production capacity of over 1.4 million barrels of oil per day and approximately 2 billion standard cubic feet of gas per day from around 100 plants across the Niger Delta.
On July 29, 2004, Omiyi was appointed Managing Director of Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd., making him the first indigenous Managing Director of an International Oil Company in Nigeria. During his tenure, he played a crucial role in overseeing Shell’s operations in Nigeria. He later became Chairman of Royal Dutch Shell Companies in Nigeria until his retirement in 2009.
In addition to his role at Shell, Basil Omiyi held several notable positions within the oil and gas industry. He was the Chairman of the Upstream Industry Group of the Oil Producers Trade Section (OPTS) of the Lagos Chambers of Commerce & Industry from 2007 to 2010. He also chaired the Energy Sector of the NEPAD Business Group, Nigeria, and served as a board member of the NEPAD Business Group from 2005 to 2010. His other roles included Chairmanship of the Oil & Gas Commission of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) from 2005 to 2010, board membership of the Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) from 2007 to 2010, Chairmanship of the Shell Closed Pension Fund Administrator Limited from 2004 to 2010, and Presidency of the Nigeria-Netherlands Chamber of Commerce from 2008 to 2010.
